Oh god, did I just write that title? I did. And I am so sorry.
Anyway...moving on.
I'm going to let you all in on a secret: I have a serious
love for the movie Hatchet.
I wasn't surprised to learn that Hatchet director Adam Green is as much of a Friday the 13th mark as I am, because his movie embodies the
greatest elements of that franchise and wraps it up in a neat, little modern
package. A package that made me squee with delight once it was opened.
So, knowing that, I'm sure none of you are surprised that Green's
new baby, the horror-sitcom, Holliston,
has struck a chord with me. It's funny, touching, and filled with shout-outs to
all the great horror classics. What the hell else could a horror nerd ask for?
Alongside Green is co-star and executive producer, Joe
Lynch. My husband introduced me to Joe Lynch last year with the movie Wrong Turn 2. Folks, there are two eras
of my life: Before Wrong Turn 2 (BWT2) and After Wrong Turn 2 (AWT2). I...I
haven't been right since that movie.
But you may also know Joe Lynch from the recent flick, Chillerama, as he directed the "Zom-B-Movie"
segment. And if you haven't seen Chillerama,
you must do so. Now, preferably. Go ahead. I'll wait...
...
...
...
Great, right? I knew you'd love it.
The supporting cast in Holliston
works well with Green and Lynch. Based upon the chemistry, it's obvious this
group are fans off screen, as well as on screen. There is Corri English, who,
my husband pointed out, has an uncanny resemblance to Britney Spears. But a
cool Britney Spears, a non-train-wreck Britney Spears with ample brain cells.
There is also the quirky and hilarious Laura Ortiz, who you should remember
from Chillerama, since you just
finished watching that moments ago, right? But there is no greater supporting
character than Lance Rocket, a fifty-some year old man that refuses to abandon
the fashions and attitude of the 80's glam metal era, played by none other than
Dee Snider. Oh, and of course, I must mentnion there is Gwar's Oderous, appearing
as Green's imaginary friend.
That reminds me, there are actually more than two eras in my
life. There are four: Before Phallus in Wonderland (BPIW) and After Phallus in
Wonderland (APIW). APIW overlaps with BWT2. A new era begins with AWT2,
eradicating all other eras.
In case you were wondering...
Green described the show as similar to Seinfeld or Friends,"but it has a very genuine sensibility of horror culture." And that
description is right on the money. I have also heard that somewhere out there
in cyberspace, it has been said that Green comes off as a "gay serialkiller". That description is, well, maybe not right on the money, but it made
me giggle and so I had to share.
So, my fellow horror loving nerds, visit the FEARnet website and find out how you can get your eyes on Holliston.
And if you didn't watch Chillerama,
may some horrible fate befall you. At least until you do watch it.
